Happy Easter

Sweet little egg family to make with your kiddos this Easter:

I found these smart little egg people on Mr Printables.com.

What to do?

1. First, print the templates and cut out. Wrap around to fit the eggs and tape or glue the ends

2. Cut out the arms, fold and place as in the picture below, bottom right, or glue to the sides as you like.

3. Place your eggs in the paper wrapper, draw funny faces and decorate as you want!

We drew very simple faces and hair styles with pens, but it would be fun to use many colors, googly eyes or other objects to make funny faces! You may want to add hats or hair.

Hope your Easter is awesome!

Beautiful craftsmanship by Meyer von Willegh:

"Furniture plays a practical and decorative role in our daily lives and is essentially the background against which we live, work and play. For this reason, your choice of furniture will influence almost every aspect of your life."

I'm in love with this timber server unit above. Great combination of modern and organic lines.

Kate Mathis Photography

Yesterday's post was all about choosing the right colours for your kiddos spaces, so today I thought I would send some colour inspiration your way, for your own spaces.

Introducing the magnificent work of photographer Kate Mathis. The colours in her work are truly amazing. I have great respect and admiration for the work of photographers. They are artists. Lets be honest, anyone can take a photo but a true photographer can create magic with lighting and colour that not even the filters on instagram could! This is evident in these beautiful still lifes by Kate:

Colour for Kids Spaces

Today I want to chat about choosing colours for kids spaces.

Psychological studies show that colour can influence mood and behaviour, stimulate the brain and body and even effect a persons health. A child's environment can enhance development so always choose colours that encourage growth and stimulation. Bright colours tend to overstimulate so keep these colours as accents in a bedroom or for play areas rather. An environment that stimulates as well as soothes can be achieved by using neutral colours on the walls , paired with bright accents in the form of mobiles, bed linen, fabrics, furniture or rugs.

Use brighter colours as accents:

Grey is the perfect neutral and compliments any bright accent colour

Babies can differentiate between most colours at 2 months of age aswell as have prefecrences for certain colours like cool colours.

Warm Colours elicit happiness and comfort. Bold shades can be energising and stimulating which is beneficial for growth and development, but a disadvantage for an overly energetic toddler.

RED - excites and energises. Associated with an inability to focus so not suitable for kiddos who have problems concentrating.

PINK - empathy and femininity and creates a calming environment.

YELLOW - happiness and motivation. Subtle yellows promote concentration and brighter yellows stimulate memory

ORANGE - friendly welcoming colour that inspires creativity and communication.

Bring warm colours into a space sparingly by painting a portion of a wall, like above, or by the addition of a furniture piece as an accent, like this yellow cupboard below:

Cool Colours have a calming effect and can make a room feel relaxing and spacious

BLUE is the exact opposite of red. It calms the mind and body, lowers blood pressure and decreases feelings of anxiety and aggression. Perfect colour for children who are prone to tantrums or have trouble sleeping. Darker shades can have a depressive effect.

PURPLE combines the energy of red and the stability of blue. Stimulates inspiration and intuition.

GREEN promotes a serene and calming environment. It has a soothing effect and reduces anxiety and promotes concentration. It also reinforces self-esteem.

A lovely calming space, above,  for a little one to chill and read

This khaki green and duck egg blue colour scheme is awesome. Perfect for an energetic little boy.

Pick a purple in a light shade so it is not too overpowering. This colour scheme above is pretty and calming.

I will be hosting a Kids Spaces Masterclass in Durban at our miss+meisie showcase in July, more details to follow. Or if you looking for some design and decor assistance with your kiddos spaces, pop me an email.

Decorex Durban 2013

I enjoyed a great morning yesterday at the opening day of Decorex Durban 2013.  Here are some of the instagram (@ilovebokkie) pics I took at the show:

- As you walked thru the doors into the expo hall, the most beautiful displays by Tracy Lee Lynch flanked each side. This was enough to get me excited for the show to come.

- The Plascon Dare stand caught my eye for the great use of colour and fun hanging lamp shade frames.

- I walked away feeling super inspired from the talk by Nadia van der Mescht  at the Samsung Inspire
Theatre. Three topics of discussion ~ evolve - prosper - build foundations. If you are a creative with your own independant brand be sure to catch Nadia's talk running thru the weekend at 11am each day.

- The North West Craft & Design Institute's stand was fun and crafty.

- First time trying an Afros Chicken burger and it was delish!

- The Space had a cool stand filled with their great homewares.

- A fantastic project started by ceramic company Or-gari is My Rhino. Thru these delightful ceramic rhinos, hand painted by various artists, My Rhino raises global awareness and funds for our beautiful rhinos.

- My favourite decor stands were House & Gardens stand by Ruth Duke and Portfolio Designs stand on the Volvo pod. Portfolios stand showcased one of our Sketch bok/dbn warped copper drums. It looked smashing!

A real creative and inspiring show, worth a visit this weekend if you in Durbs.

CIY - Recycling Station for Kids

This is such a great CIY (create it yourself) project I found on Handmade Charlotte, for the kiddos:

Kids are always using re-purposed rubbish such as cereal boxes, milk containers, tins, plastic bottles etc for art and craft projects, so this recycling station is just the best idea to house all these items neatly plus its easily accessible for them.

Do'nt you think it's just too clever?!
Check out the Handmade Charlotte website for more details.

Nest Homegrown - Easter Sale

Nest Homegrown is having a cool Easter sale on their magazine racks, bookends and magnets.

These fun and quirky magazine racks would look awesome in a kids creative space to house paper, stickers, coloured card etc. Check out their website here.

Kristofer Johnsson - part 2

Yes... I'm obsessed with Kristofer Johnssons work!

I recently blogged about the awesome work of Swedish photographer Kristofer Johnsson here. And I seriously cannot get enough of it. Just such great styling and decor inspiration. Check out his website here.
